Ari van den Akker is a visual journalist in Portland, Maine.

She currently works in nonprofit communications. Previously she was the photography and video fellow for Maine Audubon, a staff photographer at the Portland Press Herald and the Dubois County Herald and an intern at the Los Angeles Times, the Concord Monitor, the Valley News and the Muskegon Chronicle. She also worked as a photographer guide and program leader for Rustic Pathways in Southeast Asia in 2016.

Ari graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2012 with a degree in Photojournalism and will receive her Master of Public Health from the University of Southern Maine in summer 2022. Her work has been recognized by College Photographer of the Year, Hearst, the Indiana News Photographers Association and the North Carolina Press Photographers Association.
